Welcome

Seven Brothers Tours and Travels welcomes each and every one to experience the land of Gross National Happiness. The landscape of Bhutan is dotted with a myriad of spiritual symbols.

Chortens rise from the hillsides, prayer flags flutter in the breeze, and prayer wheels, turned by the rushing waters of mountain streams, stand like sentinels at the entrance of most monasteries.

The tiny kingdom packs a profusion of natural assets, from subtropical jungles in the south to permanently snow-clad Himalayan peaks in the north, which are nurtured by the inherent Buddhist culture of conservation.

Bhutan began to open up very slowly to outsiders in the 1970s. Bhutan has pursued a cautious policy of modernisation while retaining a significant agriculture-based economy. Agriculture employs about 64.2% of the workforce (2006) and accounted for 21.4% of GDP in 2006. Tourism is Bhutan largest hard-currency earner. There is very little heavy industry.  Apart from a cement plant, chemical plant and a timber factory, most manufacturing is via small-scale local industries. The export of hydro-electric power to India is a growing industry and is the single most important source of revenue. Bhutan has an estimated hydropower potential of around 30,000 MW of which so far only about 2,500 MW is exploited.  India is by far the largest market for Bhutan's exports and is still a significant source of development aid. A new Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Policy is now in place which puts priority on FDI in the areas of tourism, educational facilities and hydropower.

Bhutan is divided into 20 districts or dzongkhags each headed by a district officer. Larger dzongkhags are further divided into subdistricts called dungkhags. A group of villages are grouped to form a constituency called gewog, administered by a locally elected leader entitled a gup. There are 201 elected gups. In 2002, the National Assembly created a new structure for local governance at the geog level. Each local area is responsible for creating and implementing its own development plan, in coordination with the district.

The Bhutanese economy is the smallest in the world. 23.2 percent of the people live under poverty line but most of the Bhutanese have shelters and sufficient to eat. Majority of the population are illiterate and live in rural areas. Over the years the living standard of the people has grown substantially. Most of the villages have a school, basic health units, electricity, and connection to farm roads.

Bhutanese practice subsistence farming and animal husbandry. Its economy is based on agriculture, forestry and hydropower. Handicrafts like weaving, wood craft, bamboo and cane craft, and paintings add to the income.

Bhutan has always been self-sufficient in terms of food consumption. The main food crops are maize, rice, buckwheat, barley and wheat. The cultivation of cash crops like apples, oranges, ginger and cardamom has added to the national revenue. Cattle products like milk, butter and cheese have been the major diet besides adding to the income of many farmers.

Bhutan has made a significant expansion in tourism industry after opening its doors to tourists in mid 70s. The development in tourism has led to boom in arts and crafts. The tourist arrival has increased by manifolds and is one of the main contributors to the revenue of Bhutan.

Bhutan is a Mahayana Buddhist Kingdom. Buddhism was brought to the country from northern India in the 8th Century by Guru Padma Sambhava. Hinduism is the second largest religion. The country’s administration, legal system and defence were unified in the mid-17th Century by the Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a prominent monk from Tibet. The Shabdrung set up a dual-system of government with temporal and religious leaders. In 1865, following a military conflict known as the Duar Wars, Britain and Bhutan signed the Treaty of Sinchula, under

which Bhutan would receive an annual subsidy in exchange for ceding some border land in the South.

Three years later, a treaty was signed whereby the British agreed not to interfere in Bhutanese internal affairs and Bhutan undertook to seek the advice of Britain in the conduct of its foreign affairs. This Treaty was assumed by India at Independence in 1947 but has now been replaced. The hereditary monarchy came into being through election in 1907. In 2007 the Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck abdicated in favour of his son, the present King, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck. In 2008 the King signed Bhutan’s first Constitution by which Bhutan became a fully constitutional monarchy with a multi-party democratically elected Government. The first elections were held in March 2008.
